We’ve been on our annual excursion to Bridlington. We go to the Spa theather to watch the weekend long Musicport World Music festival.

The same B and B as last year and had already pre-booked our stay a year ago on our last visit.

Musicport is pretty eclectic. Not in your cliched “Oh my music taste are eclectic” kind of way – but proper different. It ranged form Indo Jazz fusion from Leeds, Samay performing with this year with a school form Hull through to Japanese Dub and some Brel and Piaf mixed in for good measure.

Art work was supplied by David Owen with a English folk with an iconic twist: http://theinkcorporation.co.uk/5000-morris-dancers-2/

Friday night highlight was Richard Hawley of Long Pigs and Pulp fame – and producer of Lisa Marie Presley’s new album.

Anarchic punk poetry was supplied by John Cooper Clark http://www.johncooperclarke.com/ I especially liked his take on “Urban City Living” marketing of the last few years.

He did his classic poem Beasley Street and then gave it an Urban Splash redevelopment and re-read it as Beasley Boulevard, cappuccinos and all – excellent.

A Brummy reggae band – Xova (pronounced crossover) doing UB40 style big brass reggae – checkout their cover of Gangster Paradise.

Lastly Sunday had a few highlights but the best for me was Jah Wobble (ex Public Image Ltd) teaming up with Keith Levene (The Clash) and some traditional Japanese musicians to do reggae and dub mixed with Taiko drums etc.

Videos to follow on FBook

It’s no secret that the company I work for, Ripe have recently started doing major work in The United Arab Emirates. What has been ‘secret’ or rather commercially sensitive has been that we have done the branding of a new hotel there (and a lot of other cross disciplinary work).

The team have in anticipation launched a micro site, http://www.ripedesign.com/formula1 and there is a news story on our website http://www.ripedesign.com.

We had many sleepless hours, loads of weekends worked and sterling effort by all in the team but particularly Michael Backhouse.

I had the opportunity to visit the hotel as it was being built – not so many months ago… and there was just sand and structure – the building rate and overall creation was phenomenal and the scale and ambition of the project is huge.

Now this coming Sunday I will watch the Grand Prix as it race THROUGH this building.

Quick video snippet from Berlin

Firstly we see the Soviet area East German parliament, Palast Der Republik – what is left of it after “selective rebuilding”. Then we see the new united German parliament – the Bundestag with the old Reichstag building with Fosters dome in the background. This was shot from an internal bridge within the parliament complex – thanks to a behind the scenes visit.

This is followed by 2 quick shots from The Museum Island. One is the famous head of Nefertiti, the other Rodin’s thinker.

Lastly is the art installation Shalechet (fallen leaves) by Menashe Kadishman in the Libeskind designed Jewish Museum in Berlin.

Katja and I have just been away for a short break to Berlin. We stayed there for just over 10 days with various of Katja’s cousins.

As per usual I had an absolute blast in my favourite city.

I will post up a different posts of what we did, places we visited and just general musings.

We also got to see some very old and good friends like my friend Manfred whom I met in Cape Town in 96.

I’ll put up some small vids just to get a general gist.
